This is a very strange design. One of the catalogues describes it as 'somewhat in the form of a satchel, and represents a section of a log wood, decorated with designs of some of the smaller denizens of our forests'. The animals shown are a lizard and a butterfly on the lid and a dragonfly and ladybird on the sides. It seems a very strange decorative scheme to decorate a handbag with. Huntley & Palmers 'Canteen' tin from 1901 is exactly the same shape but is decorated more realistically as if it were made from woven rushwork. See also the similarly shaped 'Wallet' tin 1903, which mimics snakeskin. The lizard used here suggests the designer may have been familiar Palissy ware which also featured life-like glossy snakes, lizards and fish. However, Bernard Palissy produced ceramics, not handbags! For another wood-effect tin see the 'Rustic' tin of 1910. 125,000 copies of this tin are known to have been made in 1902

The tin is complete with the handle and catch. It does have scratches and scuffs and signs of were but is still generally very clean for its age.
Dimensions: 7 x 6 x3"
