  • Among the earliest examples of cloisonné are six Mycenaean rings of the 13th century bce. The great Western period of cloisonné enameling was from the 10th to the 12th century, especially in the Byzantine Empire
  • Uniform shape. Properly made Cloisonne beads should not have any pits or high spots. Each section should be completely filled with enamel.
  • Smooth surface. The surface of premium Cloisonne beads will be smooth, with no rough edges or protruding wires.
  • Chinese cloisonné and Japanese cloisonné, look closely at the surface. Generally, Japanese cloisonné looks glassy because of the grinding and buffing process used to produce it
  • In champleve vases one most often finds one or more bands of design with areas of plain or etched metal separating them. In Cloisonné wares the enamel is contained within thin walls of metal that have been soldered to the surface of the metal vase
  • Chinese art form is popular for their silk paintings and paintings created with black or colourful brushstrokes.
