Chinese Qing Dynasty 18th Century Reticulated Porcelain Planter / Bonsai Pot

An exceptional example of Qing dynasty craftsmanship, this 18th-century Chinese reticulated porcelain planter was created during a period renowned for technical mastery and refined aesthetics. Formed with openwork (reticulated) sides, the vessel displays a delicately pierced body that allows light and air to pass through, a feature both decorative and functional for bonsai or scholar’s plants.

The planter is finely decorated in rich cobalt blue underglaze, with hand-painted motifs that reflect classical Chinese taste—flowing floral scrolls and auspicious patterns rendered with confident, fluid brushwork. The contrast between the solid porcelain and the intricately pierced sections demonstrates the high level of skill required to produce such a piece, as reticulated wares were among the most challenging forms to fire successfully.

Potted on a low, stable foot, the form is well balanced and elegant, suitable for display as a bonsai pot, scholar’s planter, or as a standalone decorative object. The glaze exhibits the soft depth and tonal variation characteristic of 18th-century cobalt, further enhancing its visual appeal.

A rare and refined survival from the Qing dynasty, this reticulated porcelain planter embodies both artistic beauty and historical significance, making it an impressive addition to any collection of Chinese ceramics or Asian decorative arts.
