Large Chinese Root Wood Carving – Shoulao and Children (Late 19th–Early 20th Century)

A finely carved Chinese root wood sculpture dating from the late Qing dynasty to the early Republic period, masterfully carved from a single piece of dense hardwood. This impressive work stands 36 cm high and showcases the natural form of the root, skillfully incorporated into the overall composition.

The carving is richly detailed with gnarled pine trees, symbolizing longevity and endurance, framing the central figure of Shoulao, the Daoist immortal of long life. Shoulao is depicted with a serene expression, accompanied by children playing at his feet, a traditional motif representing blessings, prosperity, and the wish for many descendants.

The artisan has made excellent use of the natural grain, knots, and flowing contours of the wood, giving the piece depth, movement, and a strong sense of vitality. The surface shows a warm, aged patina consistent with its age, enhancing its character and authenticity.
